The stage of treating municipal solid waste is one of the important stages that represent the link between the stage of collection, transportation and the stage of final disposal. The treatment stage is characterized by several advantages, including:

• Reduce transportation costs because the rejected waste will be transported after treatment, which represents 15% of the total amount of waste.
• Treatment of waste and obtaining processing products such as organic fertilizers and alternative fuels
• As well as obtaining recyclable materials such as glass, plastic, paper, cardboard and metals such as iron, copper, aluminum and others.
• Reducing burial costs (operating and constructing sanitary landfill cells) in the sanitary landfill, thus prolonging the life of the sanitary landfill.
• It leads to improving the economic and social situation by creating new job opportunities.
• Leads to improve the environmental and health condition by following sound standards in operation.

There are three factories in Alexandria Governorate to treat and recycle municipal waste in Alexandria Governorate, which are as follows:

• Waste Recycling and Processing Plant (Abis Factory 1)
• Waste Recycling and Processing Plant (Abis Factory 2)
• Waste Recycling and Treatment Plant (Al Montazah Factory)
